Novelista satírico inglés. Durante toda su vida Smollett combinó sus vocaciones de médico y escritor. Se lo recuerda especialmente por sus novelas, entre las que se cuentan las novelas picarescas
Roderick Random (1748), un retrato al vivo de la vida naval británica, y
Peregrine Pickle (1751), un retrato crudo y cómico de la sociedad inglesa del s. XVIII. También tuvo una activa carrera en el mundo editorial, en el que realizó traducciones, escribió
Complete History of England [Historia completa de Inglaterra] (1757–58), editó publicaciones periódicas, entre las que se incluye
The Critical Review, y compiló los 58 volúmenes de una
Universal History [Historia universal]. A mediados de la década de 1760, gravemente enfermo de tuberculosis, se retiró a Francia. En 1766 publicó su irascible crónica
Viajes por Francia e Italia, el único de sus ensayos que se sigue leyendo en la actualidad. Su mejor obra es
Humphry Clinker (1771), una divertida
novela epistolar.
